Van Gaal was asked about Di Maria's future at a press conference in Seattle on Wednesday to mark the start of Manchester United's pre-season tour of the United States, and was unable to provide any certainty about his future either way.

"We shall see," Van Gaal said of Di Maria, who is not part of United's touring party as he is on extended leave after spending part of the summer playing for his country in the Copa America.

"In football, it is a process, as I have said many times before in press conferences. It's not clear in one day.

"It's a process for Angel Di Maria, it's a process for Manchester United and we shall see.

"But he is still a member of Manchester United and he has said to me he will come on July 25."
